STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) - The Georgia Southern Eagles are going west, young man.
The Eagles will compete with 12 other teams in the Stanford Regional of the NCAA Championships next week. They hope to return to Statesboro with a spot in the NCAA Finals later this month.
“We were really excited when we got in, because we we unsure. We were kind of on the bubble," admits junior Brett Barron. "But now, we’re in and I think we’re ready.”
The Eagles have had a long layoff, having not competed since the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in late April. But the team says they’ve stayed loose with practice rounds or competing in small tournaments.
Head coach Carter Collins believes his team is relaxed and focused as they prepare for the trip. But he also is happy with their current form as they prepare for their biggest event yet.
“The team’s been playing really well all year, but specifically in our last few events," Collins says. "We’ve put together some phenomenal rounds, and played some great golf. We’re really excited about where we are, and where we’re going. We feel like next week is going to be big for us.”
The team leaves for Palo Alto, CA Friday morning. Play in the Stanford Regional begins Monday morning.
