Music teachers with SCCPSS receive $130K worth of musical instruments

$130 K worth of musical instruments donated to SCCPSS music teachers

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Over two dozen music teachers with Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools received part of a generous donation on Friday.

Fred Gretsch and a national representative of “Little Kids Rock” surprised the teachers at a training event Friday morning with the donation of $130,000 worth of musical instruments, curricula, and professional development. The donation will launch as many as 25 new “modern band” programs through the district.

“The product that we are bringing forth now, modern band, gives opportunity for these kids that don’t want to blow a horn, don’t want to march in a band, don’t want to sing in a choir,” said teacher specialist, Mel Whitehead, Performing Arts. “What we do is bring what they already love to the classroom, and we turn that into a team effort.”

The donated instruments will include drums, guitars, basses, keyboards, ukuleles, and others.
