SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Memorial Day’s Winston Wright has known he was the winner of the 2019 Ashley Dearing Award.

Today it became real.

“The people who won this before me were big names here in Savannah,” Wright says. “So it means a lot to add my name to that.”

Wright was formally given the Ashley Dearing Award during a ceremony at Memorial Day Thursday afternoon. The future West Virginia football player is the first student-athlete from Memorial Day to win the award given to Savannah’s most versatile male athlete.

After a career of state titles in two sports, all-state selections in three sports, and plenty of other honors, Wright didn’t hesitate to show the importance of adding this award to his collection.

“This probably ranks number one,” he says. “It was a big goal of mine, even since my freshman year.”

Wright led the Blue Thunder football program to GISA state championships in 2015 and 2017, was a three-time all-state selection in basketball, and won a pair of individual state track and field titles last month.
