SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Sunday is a First Alert Weather Day. There is a Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect for all of the Coastal Empire and Low Country until 9 p.m. The main threats are wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour along with quarter size hail. Theses storms will also produce heavy rain and frequent lightning. There is a low-end risk for a brief, isolated tornado during this time frame as well.
Thunderstorms have already developed this afternoon, with a line of strong thunderstorms moving in this afternoon into the evening. If you have Mother’s Day plans, make sure you are paying attention to the weather and that you have a way to receive weather alerts. The weather will calm down after sunset, but it is a good idea to remain weather aware through 9 p.m. We will have video updates in the free WTOC Weather App, where you can also receive alerts if needed.
