Crowd attends MPC meeting on proposed Skidaway Island development

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -A large crowd attended Tuesday’s Metropolitan Planning Commission meeting, where many waited for the last agenda item.

Up for consideration was the general development plan for a new residential development off Green Island Road near South Harbor and The Landings.

Those against the development believe the very identity of the island, the look, the feel is at risk with developments like this could encourage people to come to Tuesday’s meeting to voice their opinion.

A crowd definitely showed up. The site in question sits at the south end of Green Island Road, across from the South Harbor neighborhood. More than 100 people went to a public meeting last month to learn more about the project, but raised concerns that the project would negatively affect property value, traffic and the environment, to name a few issues.

“The only way that we could address every single concern is to do nothing," said Harold Yellin, who represents the developers. "And there is simply not an opportunity to do nothing on this site. It is a beautiful, 30-acre site, zoned PUD-R.”

Those proposing the project want to put 36 single-family units, 70 multi-family units on the site. Additionally, plans for a 60 unit assisted living facility and 50 unit memory care facility, run by a group called Springer Health Care Systems is also being proposed. One speaker against explained why he doesn’t think the plan is a good fit for the island.

“It is an island of younger and younger people, of more and more active people,” said John Evans, a resident of The Landings and a realtor. "And this kind of community is absolutely inconsistent with that. So think of the implications of this community if you choose to allow this property to be used for The third senior living community on the island. Not the first or the second, but the third.”

Ultimately, the measure was tabled until next month for further review.
