MCINTOSH COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - A couple of projects are underway in McIntosh County, including a new visitor’s center on I-95 and a new fire department in the Shellman Bluff area.
A visitor’s center is something the county says they are long overdue for, and construction is set to begin on the fire station in less than a month.
The county attorney says adding the new fire station on Shellman Bluff Road will improve response times. County Attorney Adam Poppell says they approved the budget for the project in the last county commission meeting. Construction is set to start June 1, and should be done by the end of the year.
Poppell says another thing they’re excited about is the visitor’s center. It will be along I-95 heading into the county and will be visible from the interstate, whereas the old one sits inside the mall.
“I think the citizens of Shellman Bluff have been long deserving some attention, and this was funded out of our SPLOST. We are excited to be getting this project going, and it has been long needed," Poppell said.
No timeline information has been released for the new visitor’s center. We’ll be sure to update you when we know more.
