BAXLEY, Ga. (WTOC) - Law enforcement in Baxley gathered for their 35th Annual Memorial Service on Thursday to remember local deputy Woodrow Simmons, who was killed in the line of duty in 1978.
They also read the names of Georgia officers killed during 2018. Organizers say this type of ceremony helps remind the community of the sacrifices some officers and their families make to protect others.
“To have something of this magnitude and see the outpouring of the community and come together, that’s the biggest shot in the arm law enforcement could get,” said Chief James Godfrey, Baxley Police Department.
The ceremony drew law officers from agencies across South Georgia, as far away as Jesup and Statesboro.
The keynote speaker was WTOC’s own Dal Cannady.
