COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) - Colleton County deputies say they rescued a man in a sinking boat on Thursday morning.
Dispatchers received the call around 8 a.m. for someone in a sinking boat with the caller saying he traveled roughly a mile up the Ashepoo River before he realized the boat was taking on water and he couldn’t get to safety.
As deputies were responding, the man told dispatchers he had about one foot remaining until the boat was completely submerged.
The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office then worked with Colleton County Fire-Rescue and SCDNR to rescue the man and take him to safety. They were also able to free his boat from an embankment to prevent it from sinking.
“Today we didn’t just save a life we also saved a man’s peace of mind," Colleton County Sheriff R.A. Strickland said. “Due to the heroic actions of these first responders he is safe and still able to enjoy his favorite pastime on the water.”
