SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) -Memorial Day has hired a new head football coach.
Alonzo McKinney has been hired to lead the Blue Thunder program starting in the 2019 season this fall.
McKinney was an assistant coach at Bethesda. The same high school where he made a name for himself as a player. He went on to play at Alabama State.
This will be McKinney’s first head coaching job. He takes over a program with six state titles.
In a release from Memorial Day, McKinney states how important to his career development it was being able to work with his former head coach at Bethesda.
“I learned a lot about the basic principles of coaching, how to communicate with the kids and what it takes to build a winning culture,” said McKinney. “With coach Turner, it goes beyond X’s and O’s. It’s about stressing to the kids that you are a student before you’re an athlete, and you need to take care of business in the classroom and become a good young man.”
