Searching for Kamille McKinney: No evidence for missing B’ham toddler found in multiple searches

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - The search for Kamille McKinney has surpassed a week.

Despite multiple searches by law enforcement officials and substantial community support, the missing 3-year-old Birmingham girl remains missing.

The story of Kamille’s abduction on October 12 has been spread nationwide as police continue searching for the girl nicknamed “Cupcake.”

Kamille was last seen around 8:30 p.m. Saturday. Officers say she was kidnapped from the front yard of a residence in Tom Brown Village during a birthday party. She was last seen wearing a pink t-shirt with leopard-print design and leopard-print shorts with no shoes.

It was a busy weekend that unfortunately did not produce much positive momentum toward finding Kamille. As the search surpassed one week since the 3-year-old girl went missing, community members rallied for a prayer vigil on Saturday then authorities organized a grid search for Sunday.

The grid search took place in east Birmingham extending two miles in an area just north of Springville Road near Huffman Road. The area is believed to be frequented by a person of interest who was in a surveillance video captured around the time Kamille was abducted. Birmingham police released the video Friday.

The search did not produce any evidence of Kamille.

Saturday, October 12

--An AMBER Alert is issued shortly before midnight after officials say Kamille McKinney was kidnapped from Tom Brown Village around 8:30.

Sunday, October 13

--Kamille’s father, Dominic, talks to the media, saying Kamille would never get in the car with a stranger.

“She’s not no little girl that’s going to go get in the back. She’s not friendly like that,” says Dominic.

--Two persons of interest were arrested: 39-year-old Patrick Stallworth and 29-year-old Derick Brown. A dark Toyota Sequoia was towed from Woodside Condominiums in Center Point.

Monday, October 14

--Crime Stoppers says they have multiple tips coming in and the reward reaches over $1,000.

“Yes, we are getting tips. We just don’t have that tip to push us over the edge of finding Kamille. Any tip that someone might have, any information they might have, no matter how small, could be instrumental in our being able to find her,” says Frank Barefield with Crime Stoppers.

--Police canvas the area and talk to neighbors in the Tom Brown Village community. The AMBER Alert is expanded to other states.

Tuesday, October 15

--The Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office are booked Patrick Stallworth and Derrick Brown with crimes unrelated to the kidnapping.

Stallworth is charged with four counts of Possession of Obscene Material of Persons Under 17 years of Age. He was also charged with three counts of Possession with Intent to Disseminate Obscene Material. Brown had her probation revoked. She is currently being held without bond.

--Governor Kay Ivey offers a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Kamille’s captors.

Wednesday, October 16

--Birmingham police received a tip that Kamille had been spotted an apartment complex in the 2700 block of Jefferson Ave. in Birmingham. Authorities spent more than three hours searching apartments but ultimately did not located Kamille.

--Several hours after the search concludes, Crime Stoppers sets the reward at $20,000 for information leading to an arrest.

--Birmingham Police Chief Patrick Smith asks the captors to return Kamille, offering “safe passage."

Thursday, October 17

--The Jefferson County Commission approves $8,000 contribution to CrimeStopper’s reward, officially making the total for the reward $20,000.

--Patrick Stallworth makes bond at $500,000.

Friday, October 18

--Birmingham police release surveillance footage that includes a suspect and a person of interest in the kidnapping of Kamille.

Police Chief Patrick Smith says the suspect has been identified as the second adult in the video, but police are asking for the public’s assistance with identifying the person of interest (the first adult in the video).

Chief Smith says police believe one of the children is Kamille. The second child will not be identified. He says Kamille was kidnapped in the area the video was captured.

--Chief Smith said officers and BPD personnel will take part in a grid search Sunday. The search will be where the person of interest frequented.

Saturday, October 19

--A prayer service is held for Kamille at St. James AME church, where she attends with her mother.

Sunday, October 20

--Police, fire and rescue crews and volunteers from other agencies conduct a grid search in east Birmingham. The search extends 2 miles in an area just north of Springville Road near Huffman Road.

The area is believed to be frequented by a person of interest who was in a surveillance video captured around the time Kamille was abducted.

After the grid search concludes, police report there was not any evidence of Kamille found in the area.
