Savannah preps for 2019 Rock 'n’ Roll Marathon weekend

2019 Rock 'N’ Roll Marathon route to affect downtown Savannah traffic

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Tens of thousands of people will be running through downtown Savannah this weekend.

The 2019 Rock 'N' Roll Marathon Series is happening Saturday, Nov. 2 and Sunday, Nov. 3.

Event highlights and quick details are available below.

Below is the course map for the full marathon:

Runners will start on West Bay Street. Go around the west side of Savannah and back downtown through the squares.

Then out past Daffin Park along the Truman Parkway and out by Savannah State before heading back.

There will be a lot of road closures over the weekend.

Starting around midnight Friday, parts of the race route will close, and cars will start being towed if they’re parked in a spot marked like this one.

“The signs are up. Everybody has had plenty of notice about it. The meters have all been programmed to say there’s no parking on Saturday,” SPD Sgt. Jason Pagliaro said.

Bay and Drayton Streets will be the first to close as race organizers build the start and finish lines midnight Friday going into Saturday. To help people get around all the road blockages, SPD is using a popular navigation app for the second year.

“One of the other things that we’ve worked really closely with this year is Waze. We had it last year, but we have a local gentleman whose been helping us with Waze this year and he really pays attention to the local streets and side streets and knows the area. So, he was able to program it a little further than usual,” Sgt. Pagliaro said.

A list of areas where parking will be prohibited is below:

As far as participation goes, race organizers are anticipating getting a big helping hand from the weather.

“Cool at the start, getting a little bit warmer in the afternoon, but not too hot. So, the athletes that are here trying to qualify for the Olympic Trials are going to be treated to a great day. There are others that are here that are trying to qualify for Boston, and some other events. So, it’s going to be a flat course, it’s going to be fast, the conditions are going to be really good for racing on Saturday,” said Keats McGonigal, with the Rock ‘N’ Roll Marathon Series.
