East, westbound lanes of 204 at Bush Road open after crash
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) A car and a dump truck were involved in a crash on Fort Argyle Road at Bush Road Monday afternoon. Both ended up in a ditch with one on its side.
Georgia State Patrol is investigating the crash that sent two drivers to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Troopers believe the sedan pulled out in front of this dump truck to turn on Bush Road.
Many witnesses saw the aftermath of the destructive crash like Brandon Shellman who could see the commotion through the windows at Greg’s Quick Stop.
“I’m like ‘Oh wow, it’s a big wreck,’" said Shellman. "The truck is tipped over. I see a car kind of off in a ditch. It looked really bad.”
Monday afternoon, Patrick Welsh heard the wreck before he saw it.
“It sounded pretty bad. It sounded like an explosion,” said Welsh.
Locals like Welsh said the accident scene that closed down part of Fort Argyle Road for more than two hours is not uncommon.
“Actually, Bush Road and Hwy 204 and I-95 and Hwy 204. That’s two bad areas and it’s constant,” said Welsh.
The community said speed is the main culprit in these frequent crashes on Highway 204. Shellman doesn’t want to look out his window to constantly see these accidents.
“This road is prone to have these wrecks happen all the time, so I just wish people would be more safe and courteous of all the other drivers," Shellman said. "It’s sad to watch on a day to day basis. I just wish people would be more careful.”
Chatham County Police and Chatham EMS also responded to the scene with GSP Monday afternoon. The two drivers are both expected to be OK. Now, the community hopes to see a change.
“In that situation it’s a lose lose battle if the truck is going too fast and someone tries to pull out. If they misjudge it, it’s like a train,” Welsh said.
