NWS upgrades tornado that tore through Hampton Co. to an EF-4

HAMPTON COUNTY, S.C. (WTOC) - UPDATE - The National Weather Service Charleston has upgraded the tornado that tore through Hampton County last Monday.

NWS now confirms it was an EF-4 tornado that hit the county. It’s estimated maximum wind speed was 175 miles per hour.

This is now the strongest recorded tornado in the SC Lowcountry.

NWS states the tornado started around 6:10 a.m. and traveled more than 24 miles from southwest of Estill, to near the Colleton County line.

Five people were killed, and 60 people were reportedly injured.

According to NWS, the tornado reached a width of about 0.75 miles.
