SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The Savannah Police Department is investigating a shooting incident that occurred Monday near Victory Drive between Hopkins and Bulloch streets.
According to the police department, officers in unmarked vehicles were conducting an operation around 41st and Stevens at about 3 p.m. Those officers saw a shooting and immediately administered first aid to a 25-year-old victim.
Other officers began pursuing the suspect, according to SPD. The department states an officer verbally identified himself as an officer before the suspect pointed a gun at the officer. The officer fired his weapon at the suspect but did not hit the suspect, according to police.
The suspect, later identified as 17-year-old Leevonny Walker, was taken into custody. Walker is charged with aggravated assault and aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer.
According to the police department, because the officer’s shot did not hit the suspect, the Georgia Bureau of Investigations will not be called. The investigation will be handled internally by SPD.
