Wanted fugitive arrested in Port Wentworth neighborhood

PORT WENTWORTH, Ga. (WTOC) - A wanted suspect was arrested in a Port Wentworth neighborhood on Wednesday, according to the Port Wentworth Police Department.

The Savannah Police Department was on scene and said SWAT was trying to arrest a wanted fugitive. The U.S. Marshals Service were also on scene.

Kelvin Waye, 21, was arrested and charged with murder. He is accused of killing Roderick Matthews on April 7 in Savannah.

Newport Subdivision residents were being asked to stay inside at the time.

The scene is now clear and no one was injured.

“I was just coming to check the mail at around 2:00," said Miya Johnson who lives in the subdivision.

That’s when Johnson realized this was not going to be your average Wednesday in Port Wentworth’s Newport subdivision.

“All I heard and seen was police officers coming off that back street.”

“You’d hear like loud bangs. There were helicopters flying over.”

Around 4:15 p.m it came to an end with a man in custody.

Savannah Police Major Robert Gavin says this multi-department effort went as smooth as can be expected.

“Port Wentworth and the officers, everybody’s familiar with each other. We’re always going to be there to help each other out. That’s the way we’re going to continue to do it in Chatham County," said Gavin.
