Man drowns after jumping off Tybee Pier

TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (WTOC) - One man is dead after jumping off the pier and drowning on Tybee Island late Tuesday night.

The U.S. Coast Gaurd says the 33-year-old man possibly got caught in the waves after jumping off the pier. Witnesses report seeing the man on the railing and then calling for help in the water.

According to the City of Tybee Island, the victim was spotted by a Chatham County helicopter in shallow water north of the pier. Tybee Island firefighters recovered the body at 11:25 p.m.

The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of family.
