STATESBORO, Ga. (WTOC) - Florida Atlantic has postponed its football game against Georgia Southern Saturday in Statesboro.

According to Georgia Southern’s Athletics Department, Saturday’s game vs. FAU has been called off due to COVID-19 exposure in the Owls' program.

The news coming down this morning due to a number of positive COVID tests within the FAU program.

“We had communication throughout the week," said GSU Athletic Director Jared Benko. "Then I got a call this morning that they went from I believe 11 positives to adding at least seven more and were still getting results in. So due to that and due to conversations with their student health center, they informed me they were not coming here tomorrow for the game.”

Benko says it’s disappointing the game won’t happen this weekend, especially since it was scheduled to air nationally on ESPN. But Benko says the two schools are working to reschedule the game for this season, with December 5 as a likely date.

“I think that rescheduling is actually going to happen pretty quick, based on initial dialogue that was part of the call this morning. We were prepared to have that conversation today about rescheduling expeditiously and not letting it drag out.”

The Eagles will now turn their attention to their next game, scheduled for next Saturday at Louisiana. The next Georgia Southern home game is October 14 against Appalachian State.
