CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - One person was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Highway 80 in Chatham County on Friday.
According to a Georgia State Patrol trooper, the driver was driving westbound on Hwy 80 when he lost control, crossed over the eastbound lanes, and hit a tree. The car did catch on fire.
Hwy 80 to and from Tybee Island was closed for a couple of hours on Friday.
Mack Kitchens was driving west out of Tybee when he noticed a car that passed him. Moments later, he spotted the car again, this time out of control and in the eastbound lanes. As he got closer, he realized the car had crashed and was on fire.
Kitchens says he and his friend pulled over, looked at each other, and decided to run toward the burning car.
“He looked at me and he said, ‘let’s go get him.’ My friend Will picked up a limb and bashed the back window. I didn’t hear anything. We didn’t hear anybody. There was no sign of life whatsoever,” Kitchens said.
Georgia State Patrol has not released the driver’s identity.
