IRMO, S.C. (WTOC) - Hilton Head claimed the second state volleyball title in program history Thursday, taking down Pickens 3-1 in Irmo.
The Seahawks rushed out to a two set led before the Blue Flame answered back with a third set victory.
In the fourth set, HHI took control with a 20-12 early lead. But Pickens again had an answer, rallying to cut the lead to just three.
The Seahawks would regain control and close it out for the state championship.
Hilton Head says winning a title in this strangest of years is made sweeter by what they were able to prove.
“What an honor to be able to play. We want to thank the South Carolina High School league for allowing us to play, to give us that opportunity to show them that we can be safe and play the sport without worrying about COVID," Hilton Head head coach Garret Talarczyk. "All through the season, we played with our masks on up until these last two games. It’s hard to breathe with these things when you’re running around, but we just wanted to stay safe as a team and prove to the community in the state that we can play volleyball.”
It’s the second state title in program history for the Seahawks. Hilton Head finishes the season with a 18-2 record. The Seahawks went 12-0 in region play and were unbeaten in the state of South Carolina.
