Memorial Day will not play final regular season game, playoff game after positive COVID-19 test

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Memorial Day School will not play their final game of the 2020 football regular season and their first round playoff matchup.

The athletic department made the announcement Thursday after a student tested positive for COVID-19.

“It was a very hard and emotional decision to make because our team has been working hard since early summer and to just end the season …. it’s tough but it is the right and ethical thing to do.” said Athletic Director Tyler Helmly. “The health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff are of the utmost importance along with that of our opponents.”

Since first learning of the student’s positive test, the school conducted contact tracing and the decision was finalized.

Memorial Day was scheduled to play Robert Toombs on Friday, Nov. 20 and in the first round GISA state playoffs on Friday, Nov. 27 against Thomas Jefferson.

The school will now do a complete sanitizing of all areas during the Thanksgiving holidays.
