SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Do you still have some Christmas presents to pick out? There are a couple of events planned for our area where you can check that off your list and shop local.
Abode Studios and The Culturist Union are teaming up to host the B-A-S Holiday Market this weekend. It’s an extension of their Black Artist Series, which combined Abode’s network and customer base and The Culturist Union’s contacts and resources to create greater exposure to local artists and makers of color.
Founder and CEO of The Culturist Union, Elbi Elm, says the series made a big difference in access for artists that directly impacted their bottom line.
“I think this partnership with Abode and TCU gave them a resource to people that they may not have normally been able to sell to. And I can tell you that one of our artists, King Beezus, her name is Ariel, she said that just the exposure alone granted her upwards of 70 sales just in that week of being on the platform. So I think that it’s mutually beneficial, right? These people get to see artists in their local community that they probably didn’t even know existed,” said Elm.
Alexandra Forby of Abode Studios helped with the series and came up with the idea for the market. She says it just felt like a natural culminating event.
“I know that as much as I’ve enjoyed having all of these artists on virtually, and as much shopping as is being done online, which is great, there’s still something to be said about just meeting someone face to face and being able to see the work in person and touch the things in person and smell the candles//and we love markets. We really find that they’re a great way to connect and make some more direct sales and increase your audience and you know all of the artists that are coming are bringing their own audience and so that gets shared between all the makers,” said Forby.
The BAS Market is happening this Saturday, Dec. 12, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Wesley Gardens Retreat (278 Shipyard Rd, Savannah, GA 31406). Masks will be required, social distancing will be enforced, and hand sanitizer will be available.
