STATESBORO, Ga. (WTOC) - UPDATE: Shai Werts announced he will be transferring to the University of Louisville.
PREVIOUS STORY: Georgia Southern’s starting quarterback Shai Werts has announced he will be entering his name into the transfer portal.
Werts posted the announcement to his Twitter account on Thursday.
In the post, Werts stated that he will not be declaring for the 2021 NFL Draft and will be entering his name into the transfer portal to utilize the extra year the NCAA granted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Clinton, South Carolina native was just named MVP of the New Orleans Bowl, throwing for one touchdown and rushing for three.
Werts played in 46 games for the Eagles, accounting for 34 total touchdowns.
This season he also became the Sun Belt Conference’s all-time leading rusher for quarterbacks with 3,083 career yards. Werts became just the fourth player in school history to surpass the 3,000 yard mark in both passing and rushing yards this season.
Werts was named All-Sun Belt Conference Honorable Mention in 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020. He was the MVP for the Raycom Media Camellia Bowl in 2017 and is a finalist for the 2020 Wuerffel Trophy, which is for community service excellence.
On Twitter earlier in the week, Werts was shown in a video working out as a wide receiver, hinting at a possible position change.
Currently, the Eagles quarterback room looks like this: Werts (would be allowed to return if he decided to do so), redshirt sophomore Justin Tomlin, redshirt senior Miller Mosley (has not made an announcement), redshirt junior Will Lovett Jr., freshman Connor Cigelske, freshman Sam Kenerson & freshman Alex Bowen.
They signed 3-star Cam’Ron Ransom and James Graham (sophomore Georgia Tech transfer) in the early signing period.
Eagles Head Football Coach Chad Lunsford wished Werts well moving forward on Twitter.
Werts responded, “you know it’s forever love on this end coach!”
