BULLOCH COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - Santa’s workshop might be empty after the holidays, but a food pantry in Statesboro is restocked after a generous Christmas season.
The director at Christian Social Ministries says the people who gave canned goods when they visited TMT Farms might have thought they were brightening the holidays for the needy, when they were helping for the whole year.
John Long’s struggled to move one of the many half-ton containers of food. But you won’t hear any complaints. Visitors dropped off canned goods at TMT Farms during the Christmas season. It topped more than 100,000 pounds.
The annual donations from there provide most of the food they give to the needy during weekly giveaways. He says the first two weeks of donations indicated they’d easily top last year’s record of 67,000.
“I had a feeling it was going to be a huge year. The way I’d seen people giving in the last six months I felt we’d have the kind of year that we did,” Long said.
Long says the donations from TMT Farms traditionally keep them stocked into August and this year it could stretch even further.
He says the demand for food jumped last year. He’s just glad donations did, too.
