Habitat for Humanity helps build benches to celebrate Beaufort’s history

BEAUFORT, S.C. (WTOC) - If you take a walk around Beaufort, you will see colorful benches all over the place. They are meant to celebrate the history and diversity of the town.

Now the project is expanding even further so they can help visitors get to know every single part of Beaufort.

The city is looking for five sponsors to fund the next group of benches. Each sponsor will donate $500 and choose the artist for the bench.

The benches will then be built by Habitat for Humanity. Habitat for Humanity has continued to work through the pandemic to bring more affordable housing to the Lowcountry.

The organization just finished their 53rd house in the Beaufort area and says COVID-19 has reinforced the need in the area for affordable housing. The bench project is a way they can participate in making the city beautiful and spread the word of their mission

“Well, actually, they build these benches for us. It allows them to get their builders a project, help them raise a little money, and raise a lot of awareness. We love our partnership,” Beaufort Cultural District Chair Bonnie Hargrove said.

The project likely won’t be completed until next year but they say in the meantime, they are excited to see where the artist of Beaufort have to offer.
