SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - People lined up as early as 5 a.m. Monday to get their free gas as a part of Rep. Carl Gilliard’s free gas giveaway. He says it was important for him to spend the day giving back.
“I am overwhelmed because we started this on short notice,” Rep. Gilliard said.
If you happened to drive down Abercorn, you couldn’t help but notice the hundreds of cars that took up most of the parking lot near Lucky’s Shell gas station. The reason? A free tank of gas.
It was all a part of Rep. Carl Gilliard and Feed the Hungry’s Martin Luther King Jr free gas giveaway.
“It’s a wonderful thing that he’s doing this and I really appreciate it,” said Micklereo Judd, who received free gas.
And the line to get the gas?
“Oh my goodness, five thirty, 5 o’clock in the morning the cars started coming in, we’ve got 150 cars in this lot and over 100 already in the school lot already,” Rep. Gilliard said. The line started forming hours before, though some say they didn’t mind the wait.
“Bout 25 minutes and this line has been moving good and everything has been going great.”
And passing the time wasn’t too hard either.
“You know that. Music, they got music, I have music.”
Rep. Gilliard says continuing Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision is important and being able to give people a hand up rather than just a handout is what it’s all about. Today’s event won’t be the end of their work.
“After this is over with the empowerment center, you’re going to start seeing real classes that’s going to get them on their feet. We have an insurance class coming up where they can go into a career, we’ve got the logistics, we’ve got Savannah Tech with classes; we’re not going to stop until we get people on their feet,” Rep. Carter said.
