STATESBORO, Ga. (WTOC) - The Georgia Southern baseball team has been picked to finish third in the Sun Belt Conference East Division, according to the preseason coaches’ poll released Monday afternoon.
The Eagles earned one first place vote, but finished behind South Alabama and preseason favorite Coastal Carolina.
Senior pitcher Jordan Jackson was the lone Eagle picked to the Preseason All-Sun Belt Team. The 6′6 righty went 3-1 with a 1.57 ERA in four starts in a COVID-shortened 2020 season. Jackson allowed four runs on twelve hits in 23 innings, while striking out 24 batters and walking nine.
The Eagles open the 2021 season Friday, hosting #19 Tennessee for a three-game series at J.I. Clements Stadium.
Georgia Southern will look to build on what was a great start to the 2020 season eventually called off due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Eagles were 11-5 and on a seven-game winning streak when the season was canceled.
GS beat #3 Georgia 6-1 in Statesboro on March 11 to wrap up a three-game season sweep of the Dawgs. The season was then suspended by the Sun Belt Conference on March 12, and canceled on March 16.
