JESUP, Ga. (WTOC) - A fire in downtown Jesup is under investigation after it closed down businesses and a historic theater on Cherry Street.

The fire started around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in an alleyway and spread to the rear of the Strand movie theater, damaging it and seven other businesses. People watched as one store owner carried everything she could out of her store.

Units from Jesup, Odum, Screven, Wayne County, and Long State Prison responded.

There is still no word on how the fire started. The state fire Marshall’s office will be investigating.

This fire was right across the street from where another massive fire happened in August 2014. That fire burned down another historic building that was home to seven businesses.
