Colleton County deputy responding to 911 call fatally strikes pedestrian

COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) - The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Friday morning one of its deputies fatally struck a pedestrian on a poorly lit roadway while responding to a 911 call.

The crash happened at 1:17 a.m. on Sniders Highway near Cobb Court, South Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper 1st Class Nick Pye said.

A 2019 Dodge Charger Troopers say was registered to the sheriff’s office struck the pedestrian who in the roadway.

Colleton County spokesperson Shalane Lowes said Cpl. Isaiah Bahrenburg immediately provided medical care, but the man died as a result of his injuries. Bahrenburg was treated at Colleton County Medical Center for minor injuries and was later released, she said.

Bahrenburg, who has been with the sheriff’s office for three years, has been placed on paid administrative leave while the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office conducts an internal investigation, Lowes said.

The Colleton County Coroner’s Office has not yet released the name of the victim.

The crash remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol’s accident investigation team.
