TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (WTOC) - Police say they are in the process of recovering a stolen piece of Tybee history.

Tybee Island Police say someone stole a doorknob from the lighthouse earlier this week. After reviewing security footage police had a suspect but did not know who he was.

The department requested the public’s help on social media. The post was shared almost 3,000 times in 24 hours.

“It’s not just a door knob it’s Tybee’s History it’s been at the top of that light house for 155 years, it’s been in use for 155 years and the fact that someone had to work to get it off the door is upsetting,” said Sarah Jones, Executive Director of Tybee Island Historical Society.

Tips from the post lead officers to a man in Greene County, Indiana. Tybee Police worked with the local sheriff’s office and found the suspect.

Arrangements are being made to send the doorknob back to Tybee Island. Charges on the suspect are pending
