Teenager arrested for suspicious fire at Rincon Walmart
EFFINGHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - UPDATE: A 14-year-old has been arrested for the suspicious fire at the Walmart in Rincon, according to police.
The Rincon Police Department is investigating a suspicious fire at the Walmart on Highway 21.
The Rincon Fire Department confirms the fire started in the sporting goods section. They say the store will be closed for an undetermined amount of days due to smoke and fire damage.
No one was injured, according to the Rincon Fire Department.
If you were to come to Walmart on Wednesday, you’d be met by a greater in the parking lot to explain the situation telling you, unfortunately, you’ll have to turn around for now.
You’ll see the entire parking lot roped off, not a car in it, except off to the right kind of near the Lawn and Garden area where you’ll see a good number of cars. Those are actually all employees.
We know this thanks to a post from Walmart Rincon on Facebook. They said associates would need to report to work as scheduled or contact a manager at the store if unable to. They apologize for the inconvenience and say they’ll tell customers when they’re going to reopen.
The Rincon Police Department is investigating this as a suspicious fire. They aren’t saying its arson they aren’t saying it isn’t.
But what they are saying is, when I spoke to them, is they still need to see the surveillance video from inside Walmart last night to give them a better idea of just what happened.
I was able to speak to an employee off camera as they were leaving today and they told me from what they’re hearing, they may have to restock the entire store just due to the smoke damage sustained by the fire last night.
This hasn’t been confirmed by Walmart at this point but if true, well, this might just be the beginning of a long road ahead as we know shipping delays are already causing a headache for retailers across the nation.
