BRYAN COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - A Bryan County employee is considering herself lucky after a close call during Tuesday’s tornado.

The Bryan County Courthouse is among county buildings that suffered serious damage. It’s also Clerk of Court Becky Crowe’s office.

Crowe was working late at the courthouse when the tornado hit. She knew the weather was coming from the direction of her home, and she didn’t feel safe driving that way. So she stayed at the courthouse. She ran into the vault in the basement, just as the tornado tore through the building.

“I don’t know what I was thinking other than -- God, please get me through this. I felt like the lord just had my hand, and pulled me to that vault. If I had been sitting there, I feel like I wouldn’t be standing here right now,” said Crowe.

Crowe remembers how frightening the situation was.

“I just remember glass shattering all around me. Boxes and ceiling tiles, and trees splintering. There were so many windows blown in. It was just overwhelming noise,” said Crowe.

She says she had a gut feeling to head toward the vault, a move that may have saved her life. Luckily, she made it out with only a scratch on her arm. Her home didn’t experience any damage, and her family is safe as well.
