SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - It’s a new year and that means you have a new opportunity to start fresh with a new fitness routine. A local personal trainer gave WTOC some tips on how to stick with it through the whole year rather than just the first few weeks.

Mahogany Bowers has been a personal trainer since 2002 and she says through the years she has learned that a healthy mind starts with a healthy body.

“When you are able to be more physical your less depressed you don’t have to worry about obesity and all those other things that come along with the fact that you’re not being aerobic at all,” said Bowers.

Bowers adds that many people don’t realize how just 15- 30 minutes of movement a day can change your life.

“That is going to help you with your mood it is going to help with your physicality it’s gonna help you with your mobility.”

She said that many people think they need a gym membership to get started, but all they need is the comfort of their own homes.

“Start with a home routine build that into your system and then start by going to the park and walking around your neighborhood.”

Many people fall off their new year’s resolutions because they don’t start out small and bite off more than they can chew.

“Instead of them doing a 5-minute increment workout in the morning they say I’m going to get a gym membership and I’m going to head out there every morning. It doesn’t happen because life happens.”

She said that smaller goals are easier to track progress and may motivate you even more than a big goal that can feel unattainable.

She said, “If you’re a person that likes cardio, than try cardio, if you are a person who likes to do weights but starts out low, do low-impact cardio to start out. If you are lifting weights do light weights and what that doe it helps be able to build for those heavier weights.”

She said that there is no better time to start than now.

“You’re setting your schedule for what you want your 2023 to look like. "
