SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - During Helene, Bacon County saw winds up to 100 miles per hour. That wind bringing devastation to the area.

One home in Bacon County was left with severe damage after Helene brought strong winds to the area.

The family that lives there says they were inside as two massive trees fell on their roof, a moment they say they’ll never forget.

“Inside the house it felt like an atomic bomb going off.”

Around 2:30 Friday morning is when these trees fell, one of the loudest noises the homeowner had ever heard.

“I was in Vietnam and it felt like I was back,” said Chris Cabral.

Chris Cabral and his wife just moved to this home from California about a year ago.

This storm was something he never expected.

“The whole thing was loud. The wind whistling through these trees, limbs breaking off and flying and hitting the house,” said Cabral.

As the wind whipped through Bacon County, Cabral’s home unfortunately not a rare sight.

“It’s more than we can process,” said Shane Taylor.

Shane Taylor is the chairman of the Bacon County board of commissioners.

He’s lived here his entire life and says right now it’s hard to recognize his hometown.

“It’s like coming into your home and it’s been burglarized. It’s just changed. The scars we see now will last a long time,” said Taylor.

On Wednesday afternoon, about 60% of the county is still without power.

“Town is pitch black, I mean it’s pitch black. It’s so strange to see it that way,” said Taylor.

Taylor says the county is still in the early stages of recovery, as the community works together to restore the area.
