SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The cold weather and lack of sunshine may have some folks feeling unlike themselves. About five percent of the nation is affected by Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD.

Memorial Hospital’s Director of Behavioral Health Obiageli Okeke joined Morning Break to explain the disorder also known as seasonal depression.

“Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, is a type of depression that typically occurs during the fall and winter months when there is less natural sunlight,” Okeke said. “It’s more than just the ‘winter blues.’ It’s a legitimate mental health condition that can significantly impact a person’s daily life.”

Okeke said there are habits that can help people who believe they have SAD.

Healthy Habits:

  • Light Therapy
  • Prioritize getting outside
  • Eat well
  • Stay active
  • Maintain social connections
