Publix files permit for store at Savannah’s Eastern Wharf
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Publix Supermarkets filed a building permit application with the city on Feb. 26 to construct a new store in Savannah’s Eastern Wharf.
The proposed project titled “Eastern Wharf Grocery,” is part of a larger Eastern Wharf Planned Unit. Documents show the project site is a 2.21-acre tract and will consist of the construction of a 36,374 square foot elevated grocery store.
The project includes associated sidewalks, access drives, parking, landscaping and utilities.
According to project details, Riverworks Way will be extended and dedicated as a public road. The location, strategically positioned near hotels, apartments and commercial retail space would provide a grocery option for those in the area.
Resident reacts to potential Publix in downtown Savannah
We heard from a resident who said reaction is mixed in the community.
“I think for the most part the residents are excited about Publix coming into the neighborhood, however, I think the residents are a little concerned with potential foot traffic spillover from the development and potential truck traffic,” said Chance Raehn, Eastern Wharf resident.
The plans filed along with the application, include a pharmacy and a cafe.
Currently, the closest full-service grocery store for downtown residents is the Kroger on East Gwinnett and Habersham.
