The awards honor schools where students demonstrate proficiency in cursive writing. Schools earn a Proficiency Ribbon if at least 90% of students can write their names in cursive. Schools earn a Ribbon of Distinction if at least 90% can write both their names and the Preamble to the U.S. Constitution in cursive.

Chatham County Public Schools Superintendent Denise Watts said cursive helps students connect with history and understand important documents.

“I think cursive writing is a blend of the past and the present. Obviously, many historical documents are written in cursive writing, so it’s important that our students can recognize that writing and are literate in reading that writing,” Watts said.

Three schools earned a Ribbon of Distinction:

  • Coastal Middle School
  • Marshpoint Elementary School
  • Pulaski K-8 School

Two schools earned a Proficiency Ribbon:

  • Esther F. Garrison School for the Arts
  • Georgetown K-8 School
