Fall Presents “Seasonal Allergies,” Too

It is common to associate seasonal allergies with Spring.  As the temperatures begin to warm, new plants bloom, and the world seems green again. That new growth often gets the blame for itchy eyes and "hay fever."  Other plants, however, have different growing seasons, and some that trigger allergies which flourish during alternate seasons.  Moreover, many common allergens aren't plant-based at all.

Preventing Pneumonia

Pneumococcal diseases, caused by the bacteria Streptococcus pneumoniae, are serious infections that can have a debilitating impact on your health. The bacteria are spread person-to-person through contact with respiratory secretions such as mucus or saliva (coughing or sneezing). The main illness is known as Pneumococcal Pneumonia (pneumonia); however, complications such as meningitis and blood infections may also occur.

Heat stroke: summer danger

Last summer, the greater Savannah area broke many heat records with over two consecutive months of 90+ degree days.  The current season isn't expected to be any cooler.  Anyone who goes outside for a prolonged period of time needs to know the dangers of heat stroke, what can be done to prevent it, and steps to take should they suspect someone is suffering from it.

Do You Have Allergic Asthma?

Approximately 7.6% of the US Population has some form of asthma.  Regionally, nearly 70,000 people in the 20-county WTOC viewing area suffer from this chronic condition.  For many asthmatics, physical activity can trigger an attack.  This event is known as exercise-induced asthma.  For most people, however, asthma is an allergic disease.  As with other allergies, those with a family history of the condition are more likely to develop it.
