What a big day coming up tomorrow (4-9-09) in Liberty County!! Can you imagine giving away five thousand new books in one day!!!
The Kiwanis Club of Liberty County & Hinesville Rotary Club have made it a mission this year to read and give out 6,000 or more books to school children in Liberty County.
To ramp up these efforts the two groups will be organizing this day of reading to provide 8 readers for each of the 8 elementary schools and the one PreK Center operated by the Liberty County School System. They will also read at First Presbyterian, First United Methodist PreK and the Liberty County Head Start Program in Riceboro. That is a toal of 96 readers needed in a 3 hour time span! Last year we had 70 readers turn out to help.
They are doing this project in April to support Child Abuse Prevention Month and our continuing partnership with Prevent Child Abuse, Liberty as research has shown that children who have adults (outside of family me) who show thatthey care are more likely to become productive members of society.
They will also be adding a new element this year in thatthe books that they are reading to the students will focus around recycling, littler prevention and basic "green" efforts as we enter into the time of year that focuses on Earth Day & the Great American Clean-up.
Readers will be available from 9am until 12 noon to read for a half hour and to present each student with one age appropriate book to take home with them for their own.
This event will not cost parents or schools anything. Funds for this project have been provided by the two civic organizations, as well as by Target & Keep Liberty Beautiful.
They hope to donate 3,500 books in this one day!
