The Belk department store in Savannah Mall announced that it will close in March. The regional manager told WTOC that the store just hasn't been profitable. After March 1, Dillard's will be the only department store in the Savannah Mall. The general manager says new retailers are already scheduled to move into both anchor positions.
Belk says this is a good move for the company and they've already made plans to renovate their profitable store in the Oglethorpe Mall. They say leaving the Savannah Mall is a good business decision.
"It just has not been a profitable business venture for us," Glen Sellers of Belk told us. "Our company's goal is to improve invested capital and Savannah Mall has just not been a good business move for us."
All Belk's employees have been offered jobs at other Belk stores. Meanwhile the Savannah Mall still won't confirm which major retailers will be moving into its anchor stores.
