SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - He is the first thing golfers see at the Palmetto Dunes Robert Trent Jones Course every Thursday.

And, after 30 years at the club, Sam Mulrain is once again front and center in the Hilton Head Island golf community.

Mulrain has been named 2009 Employee of the Year by the Lowcountry Golf Course Owners Association.

"It surprised me,'' said Mulrain. "And surprises are the best thing in life.''

Mulrain's award was no surprise for anyone who has ever experienced how this 93-year old golf course starter helps every round begin with precision and joy.

"He's just such a fantastic guy to be around and he just makes out day every day we get to see him,'' said Brad Marra, director of golf at Palmetto Dunes. "We like to have the tee times off on time and get players the right information and with Sammy's military background, he dots every 'I' and crosses every 'T' and gives all the customers all the information they need to get off on time.''

You might expect such meticulous efficiency from someone who has not missed or been late for a shift in three decades. But, as much as he values order, Mulrain likes another part of his job even more.

"Talking to people, just talking to people,'' he said. "That's why I do it at my age, just to talk to people.''

Perhaps that's because Mulrain has so much to talk about.

"Yeah, he's got quite a background,'' said Marra. "He stormed Normandy, he played baseball with Phil Rizzuto. He basically covers all the bases. He's done a lot in his life.''

And, even at 93, he plans to keep doing what he's doing.

"It's important when you get older to do things,'' said Mulrain. "You can't sit around doing nothing, you've got to be active. And I'm active when I come up here.''

Active enough to be an award winner and a WTOC Hometown Hero.
