In about a week, the City of Savannah will vote yes or no on a police merger. Today city council met for a final discussion about it. It still appears the vote could go either way. The problem some councilmembers have is the fact they're not being guaranteed more police visibility for their precincts. Others, including Mayor Floyd Adams, say all in all the merger will benefit everyone.
"As I've said, is this a panacea? No, there's no panacea for crime and visibility, but I think the improved communication, improved intelligence, improved patrolling, those are the benefits," said Savannah city manager Michael Brown.
Aldermen will meet one more time at pre-council next Thursday before voting on the issue that same day.
