Ready Set Go! Back to School - School Supply Give Away The Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance is excited about sponsoring its 2nd Annual Back to School Event for the entire community.  This county-wide Back-to-School event will be held on Saturday, August 21, 10 a.m. at the Savannah Civic Center. This event will have information for parents and youth regarding health, nutrition, safety, school registration, school lunch program, after school programs, tutorial also there will be entertainment and a fashion show by Macys. They are asking all businesses and churches to contribute or donate school supplies for 50-100 children. Exhibitors are invited to setup a display booth to provide information that will benefit families and children. The booth set up fee is $50 for all businesses and $25 for non-profit organizations. For more information please contact Mrs. Benjamin at (912) 596-5049 or Mrs. Scott-Pilcher at (912) 844-5522. Donations are still needed and may be delivered to Holy Spirit Lutheran Church at 622 E. 37th Street. 

The West Broad Street YMCA is holding its annual Back to School Drive on Friday August 13. The purpose of the  drive is to help working families of limited income equip their children with the items needed for returning to school. Items or donations to purchase items are requested by August 12.

Items needed include:
Composition books
Lined paper
Scissors (safety type)
Colored pencils
Construction paper
Hole punch
Clear or mesh backpacks
Erasers                                                                                                                                   Pencil sharpeners

•School Supplies Collection Drive When school starts back this fall, it's important for all kids to have the proper supplies. The "Savannah Chatham County Court Appointed Special Advocates", or CASA, is asking community members to donate school supplies for students in need. You can make a donation at the CASA Office, located in the United Way building on Bull Street. They'll be collecting school supplies for Kindergarten through 12th grade students throughout the month of August. All of the donations will go to local foster children. Suggested donated items include, but are not limited to: loose-leaf paper, pencils, glue, crayons, personal-size hand sanitizer, 3-prong folder with pockets, colored pencils, one subject composition notebooks, markers, 1-inch binders, ink pens, and writing tablets. For more information, contact the office at (912) 447-8908 or

B.O.A.T is proud to announce our second annual Family & Community Day in the Park "Praise in the Park" Saturday August 28, from Noon to 5 p.m at Cann Park, located at 45th & 46th Streets between Bullock & Stevens St. They are asking all available and interested social service agencies, churches, youth programs, employers, neighborhood associations, and local entertainers to please come out and set up at this event or make a donation. There will be door prizes, food, games, clowns, moon bouncer, entertainment, and fun for the entire community. This event is free and open to the public. If your church or organization would like to sing a selection, praise dance, set up a booth, or speak please contact us before August 26. Community Prayer is at 4:30 p.m., School Prayer at Beach at 5 p.m.

The Beaufort County School District is hosting some special events to get students excited about starting school! There will be a Back to School Rally Wednesday August 11, starting at 10:30am in the Beaufort High School Gym. A couple of distinguished guest speakers from MCAS Beaufort and NASA will talk to the students about learning beyond boundaries. There will also be another Back to School Rally Thursday August 12, starting at 10:30am at Hilton Head Island High School. The students will hear from another special speaker, South Carolina State Superintendent of Education, Dr. Jim Rex.

International, motivational speaker and author of "One Move at a Time," Orrin "Checkmate" Hudson challenges students to make the right moves.  His message is, "Think it out, talk it out, work it out, play it out, but don't shoot it out."  Orrin is a chess champion and will use the game as a training tool to teach life mastery skills to students, teachers, and parents at South Effingham High School.  He has inspired over 20, 000 students around the globe and as part of a national tour he will participate in the back to school rally to inspire participants to make the right moves.
