Arthroscopic Surgery
Leslie L. Wilkes, an orthopedic surgeon, performed the first arthroscopic knee surgery at St. Joseph's Hospital in 1980. Since that time, vast improvements in technology and instruments have greatly changed the art of arthroscopic surgery. St. Joseph's/Candler offers state-of -the-art arthroscopic surgery for a wide variety of orthopedic problems. In arthroscopic surgery , the surgeon inserts into the patient through a small incision (about a quarter of an inch long), a flexible fiberoptic tube with a light and camera that can be used to visualize the inside of the joint. The surgeon views the joint on a color monitor in the operating room. Through other incisions, special instruments are inserted and used in conjunction with the arthroscope that allow the surgeon to repair whatever problem(s) are found.
