SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - A man was arrested Friday for swimming across the Savannah River.
According to a police report, Matthew Thomas was waiting for the ferry at the Westin Hotel when he says he got hot and was tired of waiting for the boat.
Police say he jumped into the water and swam to the other side near River Street.
Witnesses reported seeing the man and a helicopter was called out along with the Coast Guard, Savannah Fire, and the Marine Patrol.
When police questioned the man, he told them he was from England and didn't know the rules. He said it didn't seem far so he decided to swim across the river.
The man was charged with swimming in prohibited water and taken to the Chatham County Jail.
