SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The Knights of Columbus at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church on Wilmington Island was honored Sunday morning with an "International Service Program Family Award."

About a year ago, the Knights of Columbus were asked to adopt a captain in Afghanistan who started a clinic for children and babies. With the parishoner's help, they were able to send 110 boxes of supplies overseas.

Deputy Director of the Islands Council, Michael Povec says, "I'm so proud of what our parishioners have done to back this commitment, and it just makes me really proud to take care of our troops and help out the kids in Afghanistan."

This is the first time a group in Georgia has received the award.
