BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC) - The Cross Creek Apartment Complex is now quiet, but residents say that wasn't the case Monday night.
"We heard people screaming and hollering, but we thought it was maybe a verbal altercation," said resident Michael Harbia. "When we came outside we saw a bunch of cops. We heard the fire trucks, ambulances."
Police were called out to the apartments for a report of a child falling off a balcony. But after investigating, police say the injuries were found to be intentional and not consistent with a fall.
The 3-year-old girl was taken to Beaufort Memorial Hospital and then transported to the Medical University of South Carolina. There's no update yet on her condition.
The toddler's mother, 22-year-old Shayla Bryan, is charged with attempted murder.
Residents who live in the complex say they can't believe what happened.
"It's sad," said resident Michaela Smalls. "I couldn't think of anyone who would want to do that to a baby. it's horrible."
"It's just a shocker," said Harbia. "I never thought something like this would happen so close to where I live, especially in Beaufort."
"It's kind of scary because this is a quiet and calm neighborhood and for this to go on next door to me, it's terrifying, it really is," Smalls smalls.
Bryan was in court Tuesday and was denied bond.
Police are still investigating. Those with information in the case should call Beaufort Police or Beaufort County Non-Emergency Dispatch.
