COLUMBUS, GA (WTOC) - Leo Scott, the man accused of killing active duty navy sailor Valencia Compton, died Thursday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police detectives and U.S. Marshals went to an apartment in North Columbus, Georgia where Scott was said to be staying. Police escorted two women out of the apartment and confirmed Scott was inside. When officers knocked again they heard a single gun shot, entered, and found Scott dead.

Police in Georgia and South Carolina have been looking for Scott after they say he went to an apartment on Battery Lane in Port Royal in Beaufort County, shot and killed his ex-girlfriend Valencia Compton, then kidnapped their son.

The Port Royal Police Department was still actively pursuing the case Thursday when they heard the news.

"We were actually doing a filming with America's Most Wanted, and we were actually going to air the case on American's most Wanted and hope to get help in capturing the guy. When we got the news from one of the US marshals that was going to be on the show, he actually came in and said they're in a stand-off right now with Leo Scott," Port Royal Police Sgt. Andre Massey tells WTOC.

Compton and Scott had one 3-year-old son together.
