HHI Town Council passes resolution to oppose Hardeeville casino
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) - With $5 billion in business investment in South Carolina last year, the economic picture in the lowcountry is getting brighter. Many, though, would still like to keep discussions open about a possible casino in Jasper County.
At Hilton Head Island Town Hall, the council introduced a resolution to formally oppose a casino. And the public was on hand to voice their opinions, both for and against. People came to council chambers hoping for their chance to speak up about the discussed 3,000 slot machine casino that the Cherokees would like to build off of Route 278 in Hardeeville in the Hilton Head Lakes plantation. The casino, some say, would be good for the community, others say it is not what Hilton Head Islands wants.
Casino backers say the entertainment complex could create up to 4,000 direct and indirect jobs, $92 million in payroll and generate spin off or feeder businesses that would support the casino's operations. Any casino would need approval from Governor Nikki Haley and she is saying no to the plans and says she will not change that vote.
