BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) - As Tropical Storm Beryl nears the coast, it's likely to have a lasting impact at places like Hunting Island State Park.

Strong winds and heavy surf on the already eroded island.  The crowds a lot smaller than a typical holiday weekend. People on the beach enjoyed a wild side of nature on Sunday.

There aren't any lifeguards, so Lady's Island-St. Helena Island firefighters, park rangers and Beaufort County sheriff's deputies patrolled the beach.

"I think we'll probably see some erosion near the beach access parts, near the campground. Some of the ones that have been susceptible to it so we'll probably see some of that again," said Jeff Atkins, manager of Hunting Island Park.

Plenty of people camp on Hunting Island. Atkins said most campers checked out early to be gone when the storm hit.
