PORT ROYAL, SC (WTOC) - Thanks to donations from a generous couple, Port Royal police were able to deliver much needed fans to an elderly woman and her family.

As Port Royal Police Officer Charles McGuire made his rounds in the community, he discovered Thelma Smith needed some fans to help keep her family cool.

"If they need it and if I have the resources to get it, I'm going to get it for them," McGuire said.

He knew just where to turn. His neighbors Norma Cooler and Wayne Pierce offered to buy and donate fans to anyone who needed them.

"We have been shut indoors because of the heat and we're thinking there are people who probably don't have air conditioning," said Cooler. "We aren't wealthy, but we're blessed and we just think the smallest thing can make someone's life easier. So we asked if he knew someone who could benefit from fans."

On Friday, they packed the fans up, and McGuire delivered them to Smith.

"I'm so grateful for it because it's hot," Smith said. She said that the fans will make a big difference.

"It helped me because my kitchen is hot and my two small air conditioners, the house it too big for it," Smith said. I sure do appreciate it."

"People helping people, that's how it should be," McGuire said.

Cooler and Pierce are hoping their gesture will encourage others to do the same.

"Maybe someone else catches on too, hopefully this initiative will catch on," Pierce said.
